Set in Girdwood, Alaska, about 30 miles from downtown Anchorage, Alyeska Resort has been Alaska's largest ski area since the Alyeska Ski Corporation was founded in 1954. The first chairlift and day lodge opened in 1959, and construction began the following year on the mountaintop Roundhouse, a historic ski lodge and ski patrol station now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From a base of 250 feet, the resort delivers 2,500 feet of lift-served vertical rise, with hike-to terrain extending that to a full 3,200 feet up to the 3,939-foot summit. Alyeska spans 1,610 skiable acres, with 76 named trails served by seven lifts, including two high-speed detachable quads, two fixed quads, two magic carpets, and a 60-passenger aerial tram. But Alyeska's real reputation lives above the lifts: roughly 30% of the resort's footprint, including the entire top 1,200 vertical feet, requires hiking to reach, opening up legendary terrain in the North Face area, home to the iconic Christmas Chute, New Year's Chute, and The Knuckles. Skiers equipped with an avalanche beacon can hike Center Ridge to access the top of Headwall for even more adventurous lines. Two terrain parks serve freestyle riders, and beyond the alpine terrain, 130 kilometres of Nordic trails wind through the surrounding Girdwood Valley, with sweeping views of Turnagain Arm and the glaciers lining the valley floor.
