Set in Pitkin County beneath dramatic views of the Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak, Aspen Highlands opened in 1958 and remains one of the four mountains operated by the Aspen Skiing Company, alongside Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, and Buttermilk. From a base of 8,040 feet to a summit of 11,675 feet, the mountain delivers 3,635 feet of vertical rise across 1,028 acres, with 118 trails covering 84 miles of terrain, served by five lifts, three high-speed quads and two triples. Since 2002, Highland Bowl has stood as the crown jewel of the mountain, a hike-to alpine bowl that rises another 717 feet above the top lift to a true summit of 12,392 feet, pushing the mountain's full skiable vertical to 4,342 feet. Divided into G, B, and Y zones, named for the ski wax suited to each aspect, north-facing G-Zones hold the coldest, best-preserved snow, east-facing B-Zones drop straight down the center of the bowl from the 12,392-foot summit, and south-facing Y-Zones catch the sun. Despite its reputation for steeps, Highlands still offers plenty of cruising terrain for those who came to relax, and the European-style Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, an old patrol building turned legendary lunch and champagne spot, delivers one of the best on-mountain dining experiences anywhere in Aspen. On closing day, Highlands transforms into something between spring break and Mardi Gras, with costumed crowds celebrating the end of another season on the mountain's steeps.
