Set high in the Sierra Nevada at 7,200 feet, five miles down Glacier Point Road inside Yosemite National Park, Badger Pass is a place unlike any other ski area in America. It is the oldest ski area in California and one of only three lift-served ski areas operating inside a U.S. National Park. The story runs deep here: Yosemite's first ski school opened in 1928, the first slalom race in California was held at Badger in 1933, and in 1936 the mountain installed the West's very first ski lift, the "Upski," a giant cable-drawn sled nicknamed the Queen Mary that hauled six skiers at a time to the summit. Donald Tresidder even bid to host the 1932 Winter Olympics here before Lake Placid took the honors. Today, Badger Pass offers roughly 90 acres of terrain across 10 runs, an 800-foot vertical drop from 7,200 to 8,000 feet, and 5 lifts. Runs range from short 300-foot pitches perfect for first turns to descents stretching well over a mile, and a beginner-friendly terrain park with more than 15 features gives new riders a safe place to try their first tricks. The ski school, operating continuously since 1928 and staffed by PSIA-certified instructors, remains one of the finest learn-to-ski programs in the country. But what truly separates Badger Pass is what lies beyond the lifts: over 90 miles of marked cross-country and snowshoe trails, including 22 miles of groomed track, and the unforgettable 21-mile round-trip ski to Glacier Point, where the winter view of a snow-draped Half Dome is one of the most spectacular sights in all of skiing. Two overnight huts allow for extended trips deep into the Yosemite backcountry. Badger runs entirely on natural snow, mid-December through mid-March, exactly as it always has.
