The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel began welcoming guests in 1874 as a summer destination, and in 1966 it opened the Balsams Wilderness Ski Area on Black Mountain, letting guests experience winter in one of the coldest, most beautiful notches in the state. Built across 11,000 acres of resort grounds, the ski area grew to 16 alpine trails, five gladed areas, and a terrain park, all served by a triple chairlift, alongside an astonishing 95 kilometres of cross-country trails. In recent years the project has cleared major regulatory hurdles, with the Coos County Planning Board approving amended ski-area expansion plans and extending the redevelopment vesting period, keeping the dream alive.
