Perched atop Beech Mountain in the North Carolina High Country near Banner Elk and Boone, Beech Mountain Resort holds a distinction no other resort in the region can claim: with a summit elevation of 5,506 feet, it is the highest ski area in all of eastern North America, and the town of Beech Mountain is the East's highest municipality. That elevation is everything. From a lofty base of 4,675 feet, the mountain delivers an 830-foot vertical drop across 95 skiable acres, with 17 trails served by 10 lifts and conveyors, including three modern Doppelmayr quads. The high altitude means an average of 80 to 100 inches of natural snow, a real shot at cold temperatures for snowmaking, and clear-day views stretching across Tennessee, north to Virginia, and out to distant Mount Mitchell and the Appalachian Trail. Advanced skiers will find genuine challenge on the mountain's black diamond terrain, and one of Beech's most beloved features sits on the backside: West Bowl, formerly known as Oz Run, is one of the few west-facing ski runs in the entire eastern U.S., served by its own quad. The picturesque alpine village at the base is home to a two-story ski lodge, a craft brewery, a coffee shop, outdoor fire pits, snow tubing, and an ice skating rink, while the summit is crowned by 5506' Skybar, a mountaintop bar and grill named for the elevation that gives Beech its famous title. Fun fact: the summit was once home to the Land of Oz theme park in the 1970s, and remnants can still be visited today.
