BigRock Mountain Ski Trail Map - Layered Wood Wall Art
by Mountaincut
Built by a community, one toll gate at a time, now on your wall. Mountaincut's BigRock Mountain Ski Trail Map is a layered wooden wall art piece featuring hand-traced ski trails expertly laser cut from premium birch and/or walnut plywood, a handcrafted tribute to the northern Maine mountain that Aroostook County residents literally built with their own hands and fundraising ingenuity.
The Highest Peak in Northeast Maine, Captured in Wood
Set on the western face of Mars Hill Mountain in Mars Hill, Maine, near the New Brunswick border, BigRock Mountain sits atop the highest peak in all of northeastern Maine at 1,748 feet, with Mount Katahdin visible from the summit on a clear day, over 85 miles away. Per the resort's own official history, the mountain's origin is a genuine community story: in the late 1950s, the Mars Hill Jaycees formed the Mars Hill Mountain Development Corporation, raising funds through creative local efforts, including toll gates on U.S. Route 1 and mock "arrests" at community jamborees, while residents like Elaine Oxnard donated over 225 acres of land in memory of her father. The area opened in 1961 as Mars Hill Skiway and was renamed Big Rock in the late 1960s. Now operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, BigRock delivers nearly 1,000 feet of vertical drop from a base of 670 feet, across 26 trails, 2 beginner, 19 intermediate, and 5 advanced, served by four lifts, including the North Star Double, the South Star Triple, and a quad chairlift added in 2024. This handcrafted map captures every trail on the mountain in beautiful layered wood relief.
Every Trail, Every Turn, Every Memory
BigRock's terrain leans heavily intermediate, giving skiers and riders across Aroostook County a genuinely satisfying mountain to call their own. With 80% snowmaking coverage and extensive night skiing, the mountain delivers reliable conditions through the long northern Maine winter. As a nonprofit committed to community access, BigRock runs the Ski4Life program, offering skiing and snowboarding instruction to keep the sport affordable and accessible for local families. Beyond the alpine slopes, the mountain is home to a snow tubing park, extensive cross-country and snowshoe trails, and shares its summit ridge with the Mars Hill Wind Project, a 28-turbine wind farm and part of the International Appalachian Trail. Every part of BigRock, from its trails to its lodge, carries the fingerprints of the volunteers, farmers, and local businesses who built it and have kept it running ever since.
Exceptional Craftsmanship, Made in the USA
All Mountaincut wooden trail maps are precision laser cut and etched, hand-stained, and finished in the United States using birch and/or walnut plywood. The two-layer construction creates a rich, dimensional look where the mountain's ridgeline and trail network stand out in beautiful relief. Hanging hardware comes preinstalled, so your new trail map will be on display in minutes.
Because each piece is crafted from real wood, no two maps are exactly alike, with natural variations in the grain and stain giving every piece its own character, just like a crisp evening under the lights above Aroostook County.
