Nestled in the heart of the Mount Washington Valley in Jackson, New Hampshire, just across the town's iconic red covered bridge, Black Mountain is the oldest continuously operating ski area in the state. The Civilian Conservation Corps cut the first ski trail here in 1934, and in 1936, the mountain became home to one of the first overhead cable lifts in the country, rigged with Sears Roebuck shovel handles for riders to hang on to. In 1957, Black Mountain was among the first ski areas in New England to install a snowmaking system. Today, that pioneering spirit is alive and well: 45 trails across more than 140 acres of skiable terrain, an 1,100-foot vertical drop from a summit of 3,303 feet to a base of 1,250 feet, and 5 lifts including a triple chair, a classic double, a historic J-bar, and a platter pull. A Record-Breaking Revival
Black Mountain is in the midst of one of the most remarkable comebacks in American skiing. Under the leadership of general manager Erik Mogensen, who also serves as CEO of the Indy Pass, the mountain has been transformed. Mogensen relocated Indy Pass and Entabeni Systems operations from Colorado to New Hampshire and the Mount Washington Valley, acquiring the resort in March 2026 and announcing his intention to use Black Mountain as a laboratory for solving the challenges facing independent ski areas across the country. The results speak for themselves: the 2025–26 season was the longest in the mountain's 91-year history, spanning a full seven months from a November 15 opening — the first in the state — to a May 17 closing day, tying with Jay Peak as one of the last ski areas spinning lifts in all of North America. Black Mountain operated more days this season than the previous two seasons combined, smashing every record along the way. Offseason improvements included three new hike-to expert runs, snowmaking enhancements, and a renovated mid-mountain Alpine Cabin offering a European-style après-ski experience.
