Set in the Boise National Forest just 16 miles north of downtown Boise, Bogus Basin takes its playful name from the fool's gold, or "bogus" gold, that 19th-century con men once tried to pass off in these hills. Alf Engen, the father of the American powder technique and founder of Alta, selected this site for a ski area in 1939, and Bogus Basin opened to the public in December 1942 with a 500-foot rope tow. From a main base of 6,150 feet to a summit of 7,582 feet, the mountain delivers a full 1,800 feet of vertical drop across 2,600 skiable acres, with 82 named runs served by eleven lifts, including four high-speed quads. As the largest nonprofit recreation area in the United States, every dollar Bogus Basin earns goes right back into the mountain, funding new lifts, trails, facilities, and youth programs. Every Face, Every Run, Every Memory
Bogus Basin's terrain breaks down to roughly 22% easiest, 45% more difficult, and 33% most difficult, spread across multiple faces and two distinct base areas that together give the mountain its genuine 360-degree ski experience. The front side, served by the Deer Point quad, delivers mostly blue and green cruisers with a handful of black diamonds mixed in, while chair 3, Superior, reaches the advanced and expert terrain on the northern face of Shafer Butte with a 1,500-foot vertical rise of its own. The longest run, Paradise, stretches a satisfying 1.5 miles from summit to base. Bogus Basin proudly holds the title of Idaho's biggest night skiing area, with five lifts and 165 acres lit until 10 p.m. seven nights a week, more night terrain than anywhere else in the Northwest. A terrain park and halfpipe serve freestyle riders, and beyond the alpine trails, 37 kilometres of groomed Nordic trails wind through the surrounding ponderosa pines for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.
