Set in the town of Bolton, Vermont, midway between Burlington and Montpelier in the Green Mountains, Bolton Valley opened in 1966 and has been family-run for most of its history, brought back into local ownership by founder Ralph DesLauriers and his children in 2017. Surrounded by more than 5,000 acres of terrain, Bolton Valley boasts one of the highest base elevations in Vermont, a genuine advantage that helps it average around 300 to 312 inches of snow each season. From that lofty base to a summit of 3,150 feet atop Vista Peak, the mountain delivers roughly 1,700 feet of vertical drop across 300 acres, with 71 trails and glades served by six lifts, including two quad chairs and three double chairs. What truly sets Bolton apart, though, is its identity as Vermont's premier gateway to backcountry skiing: the resort rents backcountry equipment, offers in-house guiding, instruction, and safety courses, and connects to thousands of acres of wilderness terrain, including the renowned Bolton to Trapp Trail, an 8-mile backcountry route running all the way to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. Twelve trails stay lit for night skiing, making Bolton the only resort in Vermont to offer it, and in 2009 the mountain became just the second ski resort in the nation to install an on-site wind turbine. A genuinely self-contained village, with ski-in, ski-out lodging, two restaurants, a cafeteria, a deli, and a general store, keeps everything within a short walk of the lifts, and 100 kilometres of Nordic and backcountry trails extend the mountain's reach well beyond the alpine terrain.
