Perched at the head of Big Cottonwood Canyon just 35 miles from Salt Lake City, Brighton Resort is Utah's oldest ski area and one of its most beloved. It takes its name from William Stuart Brighton, a Scottish immigrant who came west as a Mormon pioneer in the 1850s and obtained 80 acres at the top of the canyon, spending his first summer in a tent before building a one-room cabin. Today, Brighton encompasses three peaks and 1,050 acres of skiable terrain, with 66 runs and a vertical drop of roughly 1,750 to 1,875 feet from a base of 8,755 feet. Brighton is the only Utah resort where 100% of the terrain is accessible by high-speed lifts, served by the Crest 6 Express, Utah's fastest chairlift, plus high-speed quads and a triple. And its position at the head of the canyon creates a microclimate that regularly captures more snow than neighboring resorts, averaging a staggering 500 inches a season. Intermediate and advanced skiers head to Millicent, Great Western, and Snake Creek, where excellent tree skiing and sheltered wooded zones hold soft turns for days after a storm, and chutes, bumps, and drops keep strong skiers creative. With over 200 acres and roughly 30 to 32 illuminated trails running until 9 p.m. six nights a week, Brighton offers the most extensive night skiing in the Salt Lake area, effectively doubling your time on snow.
