Set in Burnsville, Minnesota, just fifteen miles south of downtown Minneapolis right off Interstate 35, Buck Hill has been a Twin Cities institution since it first opened its slopes in 1954. The hill itself was formed roughly 10,000 years ago as the last ice age receded, and early settlers named it after noticing that its summit was a spot where the Mdewakanton Dakota watched bucks drink at Crystal Lake below. Today, family-owned Buck Hill offers 16 runs across roughly 45 acres of skiable terrain with a 310-foot vertical drop, served by ten lifts including two quads, a triple, rope tows, and magic carpets. The east-facing runs are entirely lit for night skiing every single night, and one of the best snowmaking systems in the Midwest keeps conditions dialed in all season long. Established in 1965, the Buck Hill Ski Racing Team built a nationally acclaimed program under legendary coach Erich Sailer, a US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame inductee who coached here from 1969 until 2022. Under his guidance, Buck Hill produced an extraordinary roster of world-class talent: Lindsey Vonn, who went on to win a record 82 World Cup victories and three Olympic medals, plus Kristina Koznick, Paula Moltzan, and other ski greats who got their start on these very slopes. Beyond racing, Buck Hill offers a full slate of children's and adult lessons, snowboarding teams, summer camps, a freestyle airbag for going big with a soft landing, and snow tubing for the whole family. It's a place where a kid can take their first turns on a Tuesday night and, just maybe, end up on an Olympic podium.
