Set west of Cadillac in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, Caberfae Peaks takes its name from the Gaelic word for "stag's head" and holds a founding place in American ski history. It officially opened in January 1937 as a joint project of the U.S. Forest Service, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Cadillac Chamber of Commerce, and local volunteers, starting with a CCC-built lodge and a single trail called Number One, served by a rope tow powered by a Ford Model A engine. Snow trains carried thousands of skiers north, and by the mid-1950s Caberfae was Michigan's largest winter sports area, bigger at the time than Boyne. Today, the resort spans 225 acres with 34 trails and a 429-foot vertical drop from a summit of 1,533 feet, served by four chairlifts and a surface lift. After the Meyer family of Cadillac, locals who had skied here since childhood, purchased the struggling resort in 1980, they did something extraordinary: they trucked in fill dirt to physically raise the summit of the North Peak. The South Peak opened in 1983 and the North Peak expansion was completed in 1992, boosting the vertical to 485 feet at its highest point and creating the twin-peak layout skiers know today. Beginners have gentle, welcoming slopes near the base, intermediates enjoy long groomed cruisers with the longest run stretching 3,960 feet, and advanced skiers find genuine pitch off the peaks. In 2013, Caberfae opened 25 acres of gladed tree skiing off the North Peak, adding a whole new dimension for powder hunters. A terrain park serves freestyle riders, night skiing extends the day, snowmaking installed way back in 1957 keeps conditions reliable, and the free 10-mile MacKenzie cross-country trail network winds through the surrounding Manistee National Forest.
