Set on a wooded palisade high above the Mississippi River, eight miles southeast of historic Galena, Illinois and twenty miles from Dubuque, Iowa, Chestnut Mountain Resort occupies one of the most scenic settings in Midwest skiing. Visible from ten miles away, the resort opened in 1959 and has grown into a full-service, four-season destination. From a summit of roughly 1,020 feet, Chestnut delivers a 475-foot vertical drop across 220 rolling acres, with 19 trails cut through solid rock bluffs and served by nine lifts including two quads, four triple chairs, and surface and conveyor lifts. Because the hotel and Village Ski Center sit at the top of the hill rather than the bottom, every run at Chestnut ends with a chairlift ride back to river views. The mountain's signature feature is The Farside, a seven-acre terrain park with its own triple chair, over 25 rails and structures, a quarter-pipe, two halfpipes, and a steady supply of kickers and jumps, widely regarded as one of the largest and best park setups in the Midwest. A 20,000-square-foot ski center houses rentals, retail, a tuning shop, ski school, and first aid, and there's a Children's Center plus an affiliated race team.
