Set near Thompsonville, Michigan, in the rolling Buck Hills of Benzie County, roughly 28 miles southwest of Traverse City, Crystal Mountain has a genuinely unlikely origin story. In 1956, geography teacher Ward Kreech assigned his Benzonia High School students to find the best spot in the county to build a ski area, and their answer became the Buck Hills Ski Club, the seed that grew into today's Crystal Mountain. From a base of 757 feet to a summit of 1,132 feet, the resort delivers a 375-foot vertical drop across 104 skiable acres, with 59 downhill slopes, 31 on the Front Side, 9 on The Ridge, 11 on the North Face, and 8 in The Backyard, served by 8 lifts, including a high-speed quad, three additional quads, and two triples.
