Set in the Cascade Range on the northeastern boundary of Mount Rainier National Park, about two hours southeast of Seattle, Crystal Mountain is the largest ski resort in Washington State. Opened in December 1962 with two double chairlifts, Crystal has grown into a 2,600-acre mountain with 2,300 acres of lift-served terrain, 57 named runs, and 10 lifts including the Mt. Rainier Gondola, the only high-speed gondola in Washington. From the summit of Silver King at 7,012 feet, the highest point within a five-mile radius, all five of Washington's major volcanoes come into view on a clear day, with Mount Rainier itself looming less than 13 miles to the west. And when the day is done, the Snorting Elk Cellar in the Alpine Inn, voted the top ski bar in the West, is where the Seattle crowd gathers for live music and cold beer.
