Set high atop historic Donner Summit in Norden, California, in the Tahoe National Forest, Donner Ski Ranch opened to the public in 1937 with the help of ski pioneer Jerry Ellis, who installed one of the earliest chairlifts, carrying skiers from the base to a summit above 7,700 feet. In the 1970s, Donner Ski Ranch became one of the first ski resorts in the country to welcome snowboarding, telemark skiing, and snow bobbing, turning the mountain into a genuine hotbed for early snowboarding talent. Owners Marshall and Janet Tuttle purchased the resort out of bankruptcy and have reinvested every dollar back into the mountain ever since, rebuilding chairlifts and upgrading grooming equipment while keeping the retro character intact. From a base of 6,981 to 7,031 feet to a summit of 7,781 feet, Donner Ski Ranch delivers roughly 750 to 800 feet of vertical drop across more than 400 acres, with 52 trails split evenly between the front side and back side of the mountain, served by 8 lifts, five doubles, one triple, and two surface lifts. With one of the highest base elevations in the Sierra, Donner Ski Ranch captures some of the best powder in the entire Lake Tahoe region, averaging around 400 inches a year. The rustic main lodge, built in 1947 with open timber beams, still anchors the base area today, alongside a tubing park for kids and families.
