Big Bald Mountain's New Chapter, Captured in Wood
Set in Mars Hill, North Carolina, in the shadow of Big Bald Mountain and just five miles from Interstate 26, roughly 30 minutes north of Asheville, Hatley Pointe has skied under a few names over the decades, opening in 1970 as Wolf Laurel Slopes before becoming Wolf Ridge Ski Resort in 2005. In March 2023, Deborah and David Hatley purchased the mountain, poured extensive investment into a full renovation, and reopened it as Hatley Pointe for the 2024-25 season, with continued upgrades to snowmaking, lodging, and terrain heading into 2025-26. From a base of 4,000 feet to a summit of 4,700 feet, Hatley Pointe delivers a 700-foot vertical drop across 54 acres of skiable terrain, with 21 trails, many lit for night skiing, served by a mix of a double chair, a quad chair, and surface lifts, all backed by 100% snowmaking. This handcrafted map captures every trail on the mountain in beautiful layered wood relief.

Hatley Pointe has built its reputation on genuinely challenging terrain, a rarity in a region known mostly for gentle, family-friendly slopes. The longest run, Broadway, stretches nearly 1,800 feet from summit to base, and the mountain's mix of green, blue, and black diamond trails gives both beginners and thrill-seekers plenty to explore. With DemacLenko snowmaking technology brought on board as part of the resort's transformation, Hatley Pointe now delivers more consistent coverage and longer trail access than ever before, and the resort has continued expanding its terrain and amenities season over season since reopening. Off the slopes, the completely renovated base lodge offers an elevated experience with full-service dining at Smoke & Timber and handcrafted coffee and juice at Steeps Coffee & Juicery, a far cry from the mountain's earlier, more rustic days. As part of the North Carolina Gold Card network, a single pass unlocks unlimited skiing and riding at Hatley Pointe and five other North Carolina ski areas, and an on-mountain bike park set to open in 2026 will extend the resort's appeal well beyond the winter season.
