Set atop Santiam Pass on Highway 20 in the central Cascade Range, roughly equidistant from Bend, Eugene, and Salem, Hoodoo is the oldest ski area in the Central Cascades. Founded in 1938 by a group funded by Bend businessman Ed Thurston, who originally hoped to build on nearby Three Fingered Jack before settling on Hoodoo Butte, the ski area installed its first rope tow that same year, followed in 1948 by the first double chairlift in the entire state of Oregon. The ski area operates on Hoodoo Butte, a volcanic cinder cone within the Willamette National Forest, under special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service. From a base of 4,668 feet to a summit of 5,703 feet, Hoodoo delivers a 1,035-foot vertical drop across 806 acres of permitted terrain, with 32 trails served by five lifts, three quads, a triple, and a double, plus a rope tow at the Autobahn Tube Hill. Multiple terrain parks serve freestyle riders of every level, and the Hoodoo Autobahn Tube Hill adds a 600-foot rope-tow-served tubing run for the whole family. Beyond the alpine terrain, 11 miles of cross-country trails wind through the surrounding forest, and a full-service restaurant in the 60,000-square-foot day lodge, added under owner Chuck Shepard's stewardship since 1999, keeps everyone fed and warm between runs.
