It was here that legendary ski visionary Walt Schoenknecht, who would later go on to build Mount Snow in Vermont, founded Mohawk Mountain and pioneered the use of artificial snowmaking, forever changing the ski industry worldwide. Since 1947, Mohawk has grown into the largest and oldest ski area in Connecticut, offering 112 skiable acres, a 650-foot vertical drop from a summit of 1,600 feet to a base of 960 feet, 27 trails, and 8 lifts including 5 triple chairs and 4 magic carpets. Mohawk Mountain's 27 trails deliver a well-balanced terrain mix of 20% beginner, 60% intermediate, and 20% advanced, making it an ideal mountain for families, mixed-ability groups, and skiers looking for a quality day without the stress of a mega-resort. Gentle beginner terrain near the base welcomes newcomers, while the intermediate runs that make up the heart of the mountain offer smooth, well-groomed cruising with enough variety to keep things interesting all day long. Advanced skiers will find a handful of steep, engaging runs off the upper mountain that provide a genuine challenge. The longest run, Deer Run, stretches 1.25 miles from summit to base for a satisfying top-to-bottom descent. Night skiing on 16 trails keeps the slopes lit six nights a week, and Mohawk's beloved mid-mountain lodge provides a warming stop with one of the best on-mountain atmospheres in New England. Snowmaking covers 100% of the terrain, ensuring consistent conditions from the resort's late November opening through late March or early April. Snow tubing rounds out the winter experience for non-skiers in the group.
