Rising to 7,532 feet at the crown of the Siskiyou Range, just 30 minutes from the charming arts town of Ashland, Oregon, Mt. Ashland is the tallest mountain in Oregon west of the Cascades and one of the most distinctive ski areas in the Pacific Northwest. Opened on January 11, 1964 with a single chairlift named Ariel after a character in The Tempest, a nod to Ashland's world-famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the mountain has been carrying that literary spirit ever since, with trails named Caliban, Sonnet, Ado, and Balcony. With 240 acres of skiable terrain, 44 trails, a 1,150-foot vertical drop, and 6 lifts, Mt. Ashland delivers challenging, character-filled skiing with views stretching all the way to Mount Shasta on clear days. Mt. Ashland's terrain has earned the mountain a reputation and a local motto: if you can ski Mt. A, you can ski anywhere. With a breakdown of 7% beginner, 41% intermediate, 41% advanced, and 11% expert, over three quarters of the runs are geared toward advanced-intermediate and expert skiers. The crown jewel is The Bowl, a glacial cirque holding rock-lined chutes, massive cornices, and steep, avalanche-controlled terrain that is genuinely surprising to find at a ski area this size. The upper mountain's wind-shortened trees transform into rime-encrusted snow ghosts, creating unique tree skiing found nowhere else in Oregon, while well-maintained glades lower down offer a completely different character. For beginners, a dedicated learning area sits separate from the rest of the mountain in full view of the lodge, giving families a relaxed, uncrowded place to start. A high base elevation of 6,350 feet keeps the snow lighter and drier than the typical Cascade concrete, and the mountain's northeast-facing aspect preserves coverage deep into the season. The new Lithia Chair, made possible by the largest gift in the ski area's history, opened terrain that had not been lift-served in many years.
