Founded in 1958 by former 10th Mountain Division ski trooper Bill Healy, the resort has grown into the largest ski area in Oregon by more than 1,000 acres, the second largest single-mountain resort in the United States, and the sixth largest overall. Bachelor's terrain breaks down to roughly 15% beginner, 35% intermediate, 30% advanced, and 20% expert, spread across four distinct sides of the mountain. The front side, developed first in 1958, holds the two main base areas along with groomed cruisers and welcoming beginner terrain off the Sunshine, Sunrise, and Carousel chairs. The Cloudchaser and Outback Express zones deliver exceptional intermediate skiing, with long, flowing blue runs shaped by ancient lava flows that create gullies, berms, and natural hits that snowboarders adore. Advanced skiers head to Northwest Express for steeper pitches, tree skiing, and powder stashes that reward exploration. And above it all, the Summit Express opens the cone itself, where Cirque Bowl, Cow's Face, and the chutes hold wind-loaded snow and deliver challenging, uncrowded descents with panoramic Cascade views in every direction. The longest run stretches four miles from summit to base. Bachelor averages over 400 inches of snow annually, and thanks to its high elevation and distance from the Pacific, the snow here is drier and lighter than anywhere else in the Northwest. The season runs from late November through Memorial Day and beyond, one of the longest in the nation.
