Tucked into the North Cascades of Whatcom County, Washington, at the end of State Route 542 and just ten miles south of the Canadian border, Mt. Baker Ski Area is a place of superlatives. During the 1998-99 season, the mountain recorded 1,140 inches of snowfall, 95 feet, the greatest single-season snowfall ever recorded anywhere on the planet. That record still stands. In a typical year, Baker sees more than 600 inches, one of the highest averages of any resort in the world. The terrain skews advanced, with steep chutes, wind-sculpted features, cliff bands, and pillow lines that have drawn extreme skiers and snowboarders here for decades. Chairs 5 and 6 access the cliffs and chutes that have made Baker a fixture in ski and snowboard films, while Chair 1 opens up Austin, Pan Face, North Face, Chicken Ridge, and the famed Chute. Chair 8 delivers excellent intermediate cruising on runs like Oh Zone and Daytona, with tree skiing that holds powder and preserves visibility on flat-light days. Beyond the boundary, legendary backcountry terrain including the Shuksan Arm is accessible through marked gates for those with the skills and gear. Mt. Baker was one of the first ski areas in the country to allow snowboarding and remains the home of the Legendary Banked Slalom, one of snowboarding's most storied events.
