Perched on the north face of Pajarito Mountain in the Jemez Mountains of north central New Mexico, just five miles west of Los Alamos, Pajarito is a ski area with a story unlike any other. It was built in 1957 by volunteers, Los Alamos scientists and lab staff who simply wanted somewhere to ski, and that community spirit still defines the place nearly 70 years later. The name means "little bird" in Spanish, drawn from the nearby ancestral Tewa site of Tsirege, or "bird place." From a base of roughly 9,200 feet to a summit of 10,440 feet, Pajarito delivers a 1,200-foot vertical rise across 280 acres of cleared terrain plus extensive tree skiing, with 40-plus trails served by a compact lift system. The views are extraordinary: east across the Rio Grande Valley toward the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and west from the summit over the vast Valle Grande caldera. Longtime skiers say the terrain difficulty here is second only to Taos in the entire state, and locals proudly claim that if you learn to ski or ride at Paja, you can handle any mountain in the West. The tree skiing is excellent and largely uncounted in the official acreage, with glades that hold snow and reward exploration. And because Pajarito operates on a limited schedule and remains blissfully off the destination-resort radar, it is rarely crowded and almost never has a lift line. No village, no glitz, no pretense.
