Set on Pine Knob hill in Independence Township near Clarkston, Michigan, just 30 minutes from Detroit and perfectly positioned between Detroit and Flint, Pine Knob Ski Resort is the definition of accessible, family-oriented skiing. At an elevation of 1,201 feet, Pine Knob is the second-highest ski resort in all of Southeast Michigan, giving it a 300-foot vertical drop that translates into higher trail ratings than many of the other resorts near Detroit. With 17 runs, three terrain parks, and an excellent lift system of six chairlifts, rope tows, and two of the resort's famous Wonder Carpets, Pine Knob keeps skiers and riders moving up the hill with almost no waiting. Pine Knob offers a genuine variety of terrain for a hill of its size, with something for every skill level. Three green runs give newcomers a welcoming place to learn and practice, while the resort's signature trail, The Wall, is a steep mogul run that has humbled Metro Detroit skiers for decades. Phase 1 and Shaboom rank among the longest and steepest black diamonds anywhere in Metro Detroit. Where Pine Knob really shines is in its three terrain parks, Pinery, Timberline, and Snowbird, which have earned a reputation for some of the best park crews and features in the state, drawing freestyle skiers and snowboarders from across the region. Because Pine Knob is only 300 feet of vertical but has an outstanding run-to-chair-time ratio, skiers can rack up 8,000 to 10,000 vertical feet in a single afternoon. Lake-effect storms do not reach this far south, so Pine Knob relies on a robust snowmaking system with over 100 custom TOPGUN snowmakers covering the entire venue, and much of the 80-plus acres is lit for night skiing until ten at night.
