Tucked into the town of Roxbury, New York, on the far western edge of the Catskills northwest of Catskill Park, Plattekill Mountain is a privately owned and operated ski area with a soul all its own. From a base lodge at 2,400 feet, the mountain climbs to a summit of 3,500 feet, delivering an 1,100-foot vertical drop across roughly 75 to 130 acres and 40 trails spread over two peaks that share a single base area. The North Face double chair accesses most of the mountain's expert terrain while the Sunshine triple serves a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs. Plattekill offers the steepest and most sustained pitches in all of the Catskills, with expert trails that hold their gradient from top to bottom. The view from the base is dominated by legendary steeps like Blockbuster, Freefall, Plunge, and Northface, some of the gnarliest runs in the region. But the mountain has a gentler side too: classic natural-snow trails like Ridge, Twist, Bail-out, and Overlook wind their way down following the natural contours of the terrain, offering a glimpse back to the way skiing used to be, and the two-mile-long Powder Puff trail from the top of the triple is the perfect way to introduce new skiers to the whole mountain. To preserve its natural snow, Plattekill operates Friday through Sunday, holidays, and any weekday with 12 or more inches of fresh snow, which means the powder stays deep, the trails stay uncrowded, and lift lines are almost nonexistent.
