Set in the rugged San Juan Mountains just 25 miles north of historic downtown Durango, Purgatory Resort has welcomed skiers since 1965, taking its name from a nearby creek, a tributary of the Rio de las Animas Perdidas, the River of Lost Souls, named by early Spanish explorers. From a base of 8,793 feet to a summit of 10,822 feet, over two miles above sea level, Purgatory delivers a 2,029-foot vertical drop across more than 1,600 acres of terrain carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. The mountain's 107 trails are served by 11 lifts, including a high-speed six-pack and two high-speed quads, with 260 inches of annual snowfall keeping conditions consistently dry and reliable, storm after storm, followed by the bluebird days that give the resort its name. The back side shares a similar north-facing aspect but bottoms out in a much wider basin, where the narrower, more playful lines of Hermosa Park and Legends wind through lightly gladed terrain, some left ungroomed for genuine mogul practice. Multiple terrain parks, including Headwaters Park and the Pitchfork Terrain Park, give freestyle riders room to progress, and Colorado's largest snowcat skiing operation opens up even more terrain for those chasing untracked powder beyond the lifts.
