Set on the northern side of Ragged Mountain in Danbury, New Hampshire, just 90 to 99 miles from Boston off I-93, Ragged Mountain Resort opened in 1965 with seven runs, a T-bar, and a Hall double chair. Named for what one local historian once called "a truly ragged pile of ledge and boulder, crag and cliff, hill and ravine," the resort spreads across two prominent summits, Ragged Peak and Spear Mountain, connected by an integrated lift system that includes New Hampshire's only high-speed six-person chairlift, the Summit Six-Pack, alongside the Spear Mountain Express high-speed quad. From a base of 1,001 feet to a summit of 2,251 feet, Ragged delivers a 1,250-foot vertical drop across 250 acres, with 57 named trails and 11 to 17 renowned glades served by seven lifts total. In November 2025, Ragged returned to local ownership when five college friends who had skied the mountain for decades, joined by partner Mike Kettenbach, purchased the resort together as SF Mountain Co., committed to keeping Ragged affordable, community-rooted, and true to the place that shaped their own lives. After a day on the hill, the Elmwood Lodge, an old-red-barn-style base lodge, offers a cozy café and bar, and the mountain doubles as one of New England's favorite golf and wedding destinations come summer and fall.
