Set in the Beartooth Mountains of south-central Montana, west of the historic coal-mining town of Red Lodge, Red Lodge Mountain opened on January 2, 1960 as Red Lodge Grizzly Peak, built by a group of enthusiastic local skiers who raised the funds themselves to bring downhill skiing to the region. From a base of 7,016 to 7,433 feet to a summit of 9,416 feet atop Grizzly Peak, the mountain delivers a full 2,400-foot vertical drop across 1,635 acres, with 70 runs served by eight lifts, six chairs and two surface lifts, including the Stache Express, a high-speed detachable triple installed in 2023 and named in honor of longtime general manager Jeff Schmidt. With the second-largest snowmaking capacity in Montana, covering 28% of the terrain, and an average of 250 inches of natural snow a year, this handcrafted map captures every trail across Grizzly Peak, Miami Beach, and the Palisades in beautiful layered wood relief.
