Set just outside Rossland, British Columbia, a former gold mining town in the West Kootenay region of the southern Interior, Red Mountain traces its history back to the founding of the Red Mountain Ski Club in the first decade of the 1900s, making it one of the oldest ski hills in North America. The resort spans three lift-served summits, Red Mountain, Granite Mountain, and Grey Mountain, in the Rossland Range of the Monashee Mountains, with a fourth peak, Mount Kirkup, accessible only by pay-per-run snowcat. From a base of 3,887 feet to a summit of 6,807 feet, Red Mountain delivers 2,910 feet of vertical drop across 3,850 acres of lift-served terrain, with 111 named trails served by five to six chairlifts, a T-bar, and a magic carpet. Grey Mountain, the newest addition, delivers consistent fall lines, more intermediate and advanced options, and some of the gnarlier technical terrain on the mountain, including tight chutes dropping skier's left off the Motherlode Chair. Red Mountain itself, the resort's original and smallest zone, is completely separate from the rest of the terrain, offering a shorter but concentrated 1,400-foot vertical of intermediate to expert skiing that stays less tracked than the busier peaks. For those chasing even more, Mount Kirkup's pay-per-run cat skiing accesses over 2,000 vertical feet and nearly 200 acres of ungroomed powder zones and tree skiing. One terrain park, limited night skiing on select Thursdays, and an adjacent 2,500-acre Nordic area at Blackjack Cross Country round out the offering, all wrapped in the laid-back, uncrowded vibe that has made Red Mountain a Powder Highway favorite for over a century.
