Set on the northwestern slopes of Saddleback Mountain in Sandy River Plantation, near the classic lake-and-mountain town of Rangeley, Maine, Saddleback officially opened to skiers on December 31, 1960, with a single T-bar serving the Wheeler Slope. Every trail here is named after a famous fishing fly created in Rangeley, and every lift is named for a beloved local fly-fishing river, a nod to the region's deep angling heritage. From a base of 2,120 to 2,460 feet, the highest base elevation of any ski resort in New England, to a summit of 4,120 feet, Saddleback delivers a full 2,000 feet of vertical drop across 600 to 660 acres, the largest independent ski area on the East Coast by skiable acreage. The mountain's 66 to 68 trails, including up to 88 acres of glades, are served by six lifts, and this handcrafted map captures every trail across the South Branch, Rangeley, and Kennebago zones in beautiful layered wood relief.

Saddleback's terrain breaks down to roughly 38% beginner, 29% intermediate, and 33% expert, organized into three natural zones that each cater to a different kind of skier. South Branch anchors the beginner experience, with four miles of gentle, sloping trails set apart from the rest of the mountain, some of the most extensive beginner terrain anywhere in the Northeast. The Rangeley zone, served by a new high-speed quad installed to help the mountain reopen, delivers wide, welcoming intermediate cruisers like Royal Coachman, with sweeping views of the Rangeley Lakes spread out below. Higher up, the Kennebago Quad opens the mountain's most serious terrain, including Warden's Worry, Nightmare Glades, and the scenic America trail, while the legendary Casablanca Glades, reached after a long traverse and served by their own dedicated lift, offer 44 acres of ungroomed, out-of-bounds-style tree skiing with chutes, steeps, and tight lines. After nearly five years of closure starting in 2015, Saddleback was purchased by the Arctaris Impact Fund and reopened on December 15, 2020, and since then has invested over $30 million in new lifts, a renovated base lodge, and expanded snowmaking, earning Down East Magazine's "Best in Maine" honors in 2022, 2023, and 2024, beating out even Sunday River and Sugarloaf.
