Rising on the northern flank of 12,003-foot Sierra Blanca Peak, just 16 to 18 miles northwest of Ruidoso in southern New Mexico, Ski Apache sits at nearly the same latitude as Charleston, South Carolina, making it the southernmost full-fledged ski resort in the United States (there are two smaller ski areas that are farther south). Launched in 1961 as the Sierra Blanca Ski Area with a single 2,000-foot T-bar, the mountain installed New Mexico's first gondola in 1963, and in the same year the Mescalero Apache Tribe purchased the resort outright. It has been tribally owned and operated ever since. From a base of 9,600 feet to a lift-served summit of 11,500 feet, Ski Apache delivers a 1,900-foot vertical drop across 750 acres, with 55 trails served by 11 lifts, including New Mexico's only eight-passenger gondola. Average annual snowfall runs over 15 feet, or roughly 180 to 200 inches, with snowmaking protecting about a third of the mountain. Trail names like Screaming Eagle and Geronimo carry the pan-cultural character that defines this mountain, where Spanish is spoken as often as English, roughly 70% of visitors come from Texas, and the annual Lubbock Cup ski race is a genuine tradition. No condos, no faux-Tyrolean village, just two no-frills base areas with cafeterias, a bar, and rental shops, all surrounded by Mescalero tribal and national forest land that will never see a resort town.
