Tucked into the rolling hills of New Hartford, Connecticut, just off Routes 44 and 219, Ski Sundown began life in 1963 as Satan's Ridge, a small area built around a single Hall T-Bar. A second T-bar followed in 1965, the area later closed, and Channing Murdock, owner of nearby Butternut Basin, reopened it as Ski Sundown. From a base of 450 feet to a summit of 1,075 feet, Sundown delivers a 625-foot vertical drop across roughly 70 skiable acres, with 17 trails served by five lifts, including a new Skytrac quad, two triple chairs, a double, and conveyor lifts for the learning area. With 100% snowmaking and twice-daily grooming, conditions here stay remarkably consistent, and 16 of the 17 trails are lit for night skiing until 10pm, seven nights a week. Ski Sundown's terrain mix runs roughly 35% beginner, 45% intermediate, and 20% advanced, and it consistently earns a reputation as some of the most challenging skiing in the state. The signature trail is Gunbarrel, a steep, straight fall-line pitch that drops 473 feet and hosts free NASTAR racing along with CISC-sponsored events. Tom's Treat, the easiest and longest run at a full mile, winds gently down the mountain and includes a mini terrain park perfect for progressing riders. The expert Stinger trail holds its own dedicated terrain park for more advanced freestylers, and when conditions allow, natural moguls are seeded on Exhibition and Gunbarrel for those chasing a genuine bump run. Satan's Stairway, a double black diamond opened in the 2014-15 season, added another serious pitch to the mountain's lineup, a nod to the area's original name. Two beginner conveyors keep new skiers safely separated from faster traffic, and a modern lodge with two food courts, an après-ski lounge, and a 10,000-square-foot mountain-view patio round out the experience.
