Set in Cambridge, Vermont, near the village of Jeffersonville, about 50 minutes northeast of Burlington in the northern Green Mountains, Smugglers' Notch takes its name from the narrow mountain pass alongside Sterling Mountain that smugglers used to move contraband across the Canadian border in the early 1800s and again during Prohibition. Founded in 1956 by a group of Vermont skiers with two Poma lifts, "Smuggs" has grown into three interconnected mountains, Morse, Madonna, and Sterling, spread across nearly 1,000 acres, the most acreage of any resort on the East Coast. From a base of 1,030 feet to a summit of 3,640 feet, the resort delivers a 2,610-foot vertical drop, the third largest in Vermont, with 78 trails served by eight lifts including classic two-seat, fixed-grip chairs that keep the old-school New England character alive. Smugglers' Notch's terrain breaks down to roughly 19% easy, 50% intermediate, 25% difficult, and 6% extremely difficult, and each of the three mountains has its own distinct personality. Morse, the lowest and gentlest peak, is home to all of the resort's green terrain and its celebrated family and children's ski school, consistently ranked among the best on the East Coast. Madonna and Sterling are where the mountain earns its serious reputation, drawing powder hounds to narrow, natural-snow trails, extensive glades, and the legendary Fab Five, a set of black diamond runs considered among the toughest in the region. Above it all sits The Black Hole, Vermont's only triple black diamond trail and the sole run of its rating anywhere in the East. Six terrain parks, from the beginner-friendly Burton Treehouse Riglet Park to the advanced features of The Zone, give freestyle riders room to progress at every level. Beyond the alpine trails, Smuggs offers 34 kilometres of cross-country track and another 20 kilometres of snowshoeing trails, plus snow tubing on Sir Henry's Hill, ice skating, and an indoor pool for warming up after a long day on the mountain.
