Set six miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon, about 29 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, Snowbird was founded in 1971 when Ted Johnson pieced together forgotten mining claims, including one named Snowbird, to build a second ski area in the canyon alongside neighboring Alta. Its futuristic Aerial Tram, still Utah's only one, was a revelation from day one: a 125-person cabin rides 1.6 miles of cable and 2,900 vertical feet up to 11,000-foot Hidden Peak in about seven to ten minutes. From a base of 7,760 feet to that same summit, Snowbird delivers a 3,240-foot vertical drop across 2,500 acres, with roughly 169 trails served by 13 lifts, including the Tram, high-speed quads, and classic double chairs. Averaging 500 inches of low-density, dry Utah powder a year, thanks to the famous Cottonwood Canyon lake effect, Snowbird also boasts one of the longest seasons in the state, often running from mid-November into May. The front face is relentlessly steep, with north-facing slopes that hold packed powder beautifully, while Mineral Basin on the backside opens up wide, sun-drenched bowl skiing connected to neighboring Alta via the Alta-Bird connection near the top of the Baldy chairlift. Chip's Run, the longest at 2.5 miles, and the 3.5-mile descent through Gad Valley reward those who want to see the whole mountain in a single run. A terrain park and superpipe sit on Big Emma, accessed by the Mid Gad or Gadzoom lifts, and heli-skiing operates daily out of Snowbird for those chasing terrain beyond the ropes.
