Set atop Cheat Mountain in Pocahontas County, deep in the Allegheny Mountains and the Monongahela National Forest, Snowshoe Mountain sits at 4,848 feet, the second-highest point in West Virginia. Discovered by North Carolina dentist Thomas "Doc" Brigham, who had already built Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain, Snowshoe opened for skiing on December 13, 1974, on land that had been logged and abandoned decades earlier. From a base of 3,348 feet to that 4,848-foot summit, the resort delivers a 1,500-foot vertical drop, the largest in the region, across 244 to 257 acres, with 60 trails served by 14 lifts, including the Ballhooter and Soaring Eagle high-speed quads. This is a reverse-elevation resort, meaning skiers start their day at the mountaintop village and work their way down. Average annual snowfall runs around 180 inches, backed by 100% snowmaking. Blacks, double blacks, and glades make up 36% of Snowshoe's acreage, with moguls forming on Knot Bumper, Choker, and Lower Shay's Revenge. Silver Creek, reached by free shuttle two miles down the road, offers tamer terrain, the resort's only night skiing, the Ruckus Ridge tubing park, and a snowboard park, making it a favorite for families and those learning to ride. Four Mountaineer terrain parks, including Timberjack and Spruce Glades, round out the offering for freestyle riders at every level.
