Set at the crest of Stevens Pass along U.S. Route 2 in the Cascade Range, roughly two hours from Seattle and 37 miles west of Leavenworth, Stevens Pass has been welcoming skiers since it opened in 1937. From a base of 4,061 feet to a summit of 5,845 feet on Cowboy Mountain, the resort delivers 1,800 feet of vertical across 1,125 acres, with 37 major runs and glades served by ten chairlifts. Spread across three sides of two peaks, Cowboy Mountain and Big Chief Mountain, the mountain is essentially divided into a north and east-facing front side, where eight of the ten lifts are located, and a south-facing backside dropping into Mill Valley. Averaging around 450 inches of snow a year, Stevens Pass punches above its modest size thanks to that generous accumulation and genuinely demanding terrain. Stevens Pass's terrain breaks down to roughly 11% beginner, 54% intermediate, and 35% advanced, and while the beginner learning area is solid and the groomed intermediate cruisers are dependable, the real strength of the mountain lies in its off-piste and expert terrain. The 7th Heaven zone lives up to its name, a genuine powder paradise of bowls, tree skiing, and cliff bands even though the runs themselves are relatively short. Double Diamond, an aptly named and appropriately wide black run off the Southern Cross area, drops straight back to the front side, while Kehr's chair serves Showcase, one of the mountain's nicest sloped intermediate runs and one that is also lit for night skiing. Much of Stevens Pass's steepest terrain requires a short hike from the lift, keeping it quieter and holding powder longer. Three to four terrain parks, including Top Phlight, Tye Creek, and the Rail Garden, offer over 75 features for freestyle riders, and night skiing runs as late as 10pm several nights a week, giving Seattle locals a place for after-work laps all winter long.
