Near the town of Stowe in northern Vermont, Stowe Mountain Resort spans two connected peaks, Mount Mansfield, the highest point in the state, and Spruce Peak, linked by the Over Easy inter-mountain gondola. Alpine skiing came to Vermont here in 1933, when the Civilian Conservation Corps cut the first trails on Mount Mansfield, and the Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol, founded in 1934, is recognized as the oldest in the nation. From a base of 1,559 feet to a summit of 4,395 feet, Stowe delivers a 2,360-foot vertical drop, the fourth largest in Vermont and fifth largest in New England, across 485 skiable acres. The resort's 116 trails, spanning over 40 miles, are served by twelve lifts, including two gondolas, and Stowe boasts more mile-long lifts than any resort in the eastern United States.
