Set on Stratton Mountain in Windham County, Vermont, east of Manchester and within easy reach of Boston and New York City, Stratton opened in December 1961 with three double chairlifts and a three-story base lodge. The Snow Bowl expansion in the mid-1960s and the arrival of the Innsbruck Trio, a group of Austrian instructors who became known as the Stratton Mountain Boys, gave the resort its early European-style après-ski flair. From a base of 1,872 feet to a summit of 3,875 feet, Stratton delivers a 2,003-foot vertical drop across 625 to 670 acres of terrain, with 99 trails, over 160 acres of glades, and 14 lifts, including a summit gondola and four high-speed six-packs. Averaging around 180 inches of snow a year, with 95% snowmaking coverage powered by 1,200 snowguns, Stratton is famously known as the birthplace of snowboarding, developed just down the road from Jake Burton's hometown of Londonderry, and was among the first ski areas in the country to allow the sport. Stratton's terrain breaks down to roughly 40% beginner, 35% intermediate, 16% advanced, and 9% expert, ranked among the best beginner terrain in Vermont, with learning areas like Suntanner and Cub Run giving first-timers a comfortable place to start. Intermediates enjoy smooth, manicured cruisers like Mike's Way and Black Bear, plus over 30 kilometres of groomed trails and Easy Street, the longest run at 3 miles. Advanced skiers head to Upper and Lower Kidderbrook and Upper and Lower Standard, while glades weave throughout the mountain for those chasing a bit more adventure, though true super steeps are limited since most of Stratton is regularly groomed. The Sun Bowl side offers longer runs, smaller crowds, and slightly warmer temperatures than the main mountain. With its snowboarding roots running deep, Stratton maintains five terrain parks packed with jumps, rails, and features for riders of every level, and a compact base village with dining, shopping, and Grizzly's, a favorite spot for live music and après-ski.
