Set high on Donner Summit in Norden, California, three miles off Interstate 80 in the Sierra Nevada, Sugar Bowl was the vision of Austrian ski champion Hannes Schroll, who dreamed of a European-style resort in the Sierra and opened the mountain in December 1939. One of his earliest financial backers was Walt Disney, who had taken ski lessons from Schroll and became an early stockholder for a modest $2,500. That first season, Sugar Bowl installed California's very first chairlift, and in 1953 it added the West Coast's first ski gondola. Hollywood took notice: Errol Flynn, Rita Hayworth, Claudette Colbert, and Norma Shearer were regulars on the slopes, and Charlie Chaplin filmed scenes for "The Gold Rush" here back in 1924. From a base of 6,883 feet to a summit of 8,383 feet across four peaks, Mount Lincoln, Mount Disney, Mount Judah, and Crow's Nest Peak, Sugar Bowl delivers 1,500 feet of vertical across 1,650 skiable acres, with 103 trails served by 13 lifts, including five high-speed quads and a gondola.
