Set in the Mad River Valley in Warren, Vermont, Sugarbush was founded on Christmas Day in 1958 and has grown into a sprawling six-peak resort spread across two mountain areas, Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen, separated by the wild 2,000-acre Slide Brook Basin and connected by the two-mile Slide Brook Express chairlift. With a 2,600-foot vertical drop, the second-largest in Vermont behind Killington, and over 4,000 total acres of terrain, including 484 on-trail acres across 111 trails and 97 acres of designated glades, Sugarbush brings a genuine taste of western-scale skiing to the East. Lincoln Peak is the resort's main hub, home to a full village with lodging and dining, while Mount Ellen, Vermont's third-highest peak and still called Sugarbush North by locals, keeps a quieter, more rustic character. Sugarbush's terrain breaks down to roughly 19% beginner, 34% intermediate, 22% advanced, and 6% expert, plus 20% dedicated tree skiing, and the mountain's character shifts dramatically depending on where you ski. Lincoln Peak actually comprises three mountains in one, Lincoln Peak itself, Castlerock Peak, and North Lynx Peak, all sharing a base but spread far apart at the summit. Castlerock is the legend here: the only peak at Sugarbush with no snowmaking, home to steep, narrow, winding New England-style trails and Rumble, widely considered the most difficult run on the mountain. The North Lynx and Gate House areas deliver some of the best intermediate cruising in the valley, while beginners have their pick of gentle greens off the Village Quad bunny hill. Over at Mount Ellen, wide-open cruisers and solid intermediate terrain dominate, with steep, moguled pitches near the summit and the Riemergasse Terrain Park for freestyle riders. Twenty-eight wooded glade areas spread across both mountains offer beginner to advanced tree skiing, and Sugarbush proudly offers the only cat skiing in the East, opening up even more of the vast, wild Slide Brook Basin.
