Set 56 kilometres northeast of Kamloops in the heart of the British Columbia Interior, Sun Peaks Resort traces its roots back to 1958, when Donald Whyte and Donald Munro first spotted Tod Mountain from a rise along Highway 97 and set out to build a ski area there. Today Sun Peaks spans three distinct mountains, Tod Mountain, Sundance Mountain, and Mount Morrisey, connected by a modern, ski-through alpine village at the base. From a base of 1,198 metres to a summit of 2,152 metres, the resort delivers an 882-metre, 2,894-foot vertical drop, the longest in the BC Interior, across 4,270 acres, the second-largest skiable footprint in all of Canada. Its 137 to 144 trails, including 17 gladed areas and two alpine bowls, are served by 13 lifts, with the Burfield chair alone offering a 23-minute ride to the summit. Sundance Mountain is an intermediate's paradise, with wide, groomed cruisers holding consistent pitch from top to bottom. Remarkably for a resort this large, nearly every chairlift offers an easy way down, making Sun Peaks one of the most beginner-friendly mega-resorts anywhere, with the Sundance and Orient zones offering some of the most novice-oriented terrain on the mountain. Beyond the lift-served slopes, a full-day cat ski tour opens up genuine backcountry access, and over 23 miles of Nordic trails wind through the surrounding forest.
