A Mountain Built on Conservation and Craft, Captured in Wood
Tucked 14 miles up scenic Provo Canyon at the base of 11,750-foot Mount Timpanogos in North Fork Canyon, Sundance Mountain Resort began humbly in 1944 as a small operation called Timp Haven, named through a local contest. In 1969, actor and director Robert Redford acquired the land and transformed it into a resort unlike any other, one where development has always taken a back seat to conservation across more than 4,000 to 5,000 protected acres of wilderness. From a base of 1,860 metres to a summit of 2,514 metres, Sundance offers 500 to 540 acres of skiable terrain across 44 to 72 trails served by detachable chairlifts with famously short lines. A recent two-phase expansion is adding roughly 165 acres of new terrain, including a sweeping new groomer on the Far East ridge with panoramic views of Utah Valley, Heber Valley, and three mountain lakes. Every Trail, Every Bowl, Every Memory
Sundance's terrain breaks down to roughly 20% beginner, 40% intermediate, and 40% advanced, with friendly groomers leading up to the open powder terrain of Bishop's Bowl and glades of aspen scattered throughout the mountain. Compared to nearby mega-resorts like Park City or Snowbird, Sundance stays small, uncrowded, and unhurried, exactly by design. Night skiing runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday on much of the front mountain, including runs like Top Gun, Montoya, Stampede, and Maverick, along with the terrain park. Beyond the slopes, Sundance remains a genuine creative retreat: guests can take classes in silversmithing, glassblowing, painting, and pottery at the resort's Art Studio, dine at the Forbes four-star Tree Room surrounded by Redford's personal collection of Native American art, or raise a glass at the historic Owl Bar, an authentic 1890s saloon once frequented by Butch Cassidy's gang. It was here, in 1981, that Redford founded the Sundance Institute, which grew into the internationally renowned Sundance Film Festival. Robert Redford passed away at his home here in September 2025, and the mountain he shaped for more than five decades continues to carry his vision forward.
