Set in the White River National Forest just 12 miles south of Glenwood Springs, Sunlight Mountain Resort is one of Colorado's best-kept secrets and one of its best values. Opened in December 1966, this independent, family-owned ski area sits in a northeast-facing basin that funnels every run back to a single base lodge, making it one of the easiest mountains anywhere to navigate with the whole family. From a base of 7,885 feet, Sunlight climbs to a summit of 9,895 feet on Compass Peak, delivering a surprising 2,010-foot vertical drop across roughly 730 acres of terrain. Sixty-seven-plus trails are served by three chairlifts, and an average of 250 inches of Colorado snow keeps the mountain covered all season. From the summit, skiers and riders enjoy unhindered views of majestic Mount Sopris and the surrounding Elk Mountain Range. Sunlight is built for progression, with a terrain mix of roughly 20% beginner, 55% intermediate, 20% advanced, and 5% expert. More than half the mountain is intermediate terrain, delivering endless groomed cruisers and leg-burning bumps, and the glades at Sunlight are widely considered some of the finest tree skiing in all of Colorado. From the summit, Ute unspools more than 2.5 miles from top to base, making it one of the longest ski runs in the state and a beginner-friendly cruiser that lets first-timers ski the full mountain. At the other end of the spectrum sits Sunlight Extreme and the East Ridge, home to The Heathen, one of the steepest trails in Colorado, plunging at a 52-degree pitch to Four Mile Creek below. A terrain park rounds out the on-mountain fun, and beyond the lifts, 29 kilometres of groomed Nordic and snowshoe trails wind through Babbish Gulch, with backcountry snowmobile tours available through the surrounding national forest. Sunlight was the first ski area in the nation to offer a special pass program for grade-school students, and World Cup champion Alice McKennis learned to ski here.
