Set off Route 70 about an hour south of Rochester and 60 miles southeast of Buffalo, Swain Resort is the oldest continuously operated ski area in New York State. From a base of 1,320 feet to a summit of 1,970 feet, Swain delivers a 650-foot vertical drop across 120 to 130 acres, with 35 trails served by five lifts, including three quad chairs that give access to every corner of the mountain. Swain was the first ski resort in New York to allow snowboarding, and with 97% snowmaking coverage and night skiing on most of the trails, this family-owned mountain keeps a proud independent spirit alive in a corner of the ski world increasingly dominated by conglomerates. Swain's terrain divides almost perfectly evenly, roughly 31% beginner, 37% intermediate, and 31% advanced, with no true double-diamond runs but plenty of genuine challenge for a mountain its size. Quad One reaches every part of the hill, and the steepest terrain sits centrally located, where the headwalls of Robinson's Run and Last Will get the blood flowing before opening up into wide, carving turns lower down. Skier's left of Quad One delivers classic East Coast skiing, with tight, tree-lined trails winding in and out of each other. Quad Two serves the lower half of the mountain and is a great place for beginners and children to get started, while skier's right toward Quad Three the terrain mellows into blues and greens, with the resort's terrain park located under Quad Three off of Clark, offering a surprisingly progressive mix of boxes and jibs for a smaller mountain. An all-natural terrain feature on the Black Forest Run gives riders a stash-style zone, and three blue glades off Quad Three weave between cruisers with sustained pitch, including 80 Acres. Swain is home to World Champion medalist AJ Kitt, and generations of families, including many second and third-generation regulars, keep coming back to teach their own kids and grandkids to ski here.
