Set in Plymouth, New Hampshire, on Route 3A South, Tenney Mountain traces its roots back to just after World War II, when one of the storied 10th Mountain Division veterans teamed up with a local surveyor, believing Plymouth deserved a skiers' mountain of its own. The first trails were cut in 1959, and in 1964 the addition of the Stadeli double chair, nicknamed the Hornet Double, made Tenney the largest ski area in the region at the time. From a base of 749 feet to a summit of 2,149 to 2,350 feet, the mountain offers 1,400 to 1,500 feet of vertical, one of the biggest verticals in the Lakes Region, across roughly 110 to 130 acres, with 45 to 58 trails served by a triple chair, a double chair, and surface lifts. Trails here twist and turn with the natural contours of the mountain, mostly intermediate in character, and lift lines have always been famously nonexistent. After 45 years of operation, financial struggles closed Tenney Mountain in 2010, and for years it sat quiet, with only rumors of a possible return. But those rumors became reality: the mountain reopened for lift-served skiing in March 2018, weathered a pandemic-forced closure in 2020, and reopened again for good in February 2023 under North Country Development Group, which has poured major investment into snowmaking and mountain infrastructure ever since. Today Tenney delivers roughly 13% novice, 56% intermediate, and 31% advanced terrain, with epic tree skiing, perfectly groomed trails, and a brand-new terrain park lit for evening riding and served by its own rope tow. Snowmaking now covers roughly 83% of the mountain, ensuring the reliable conditions that eluded Tenney for years. After a day on the slopes, the on-mountain bar and restaurant serves fresh, local fare in a cozy, small-mountain atmosphere that longtime regulars say has never lost its charm, even through every closure and reopening.
