Set in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota, five miles from historic Lead and eight miles from Deadwood, Terry Peak is the most prominent summit in the Northern Black Hills and the sixth highest in the entire range. Named for Alfred Howe Terry, an army general who explored the area, the mountain has a skiing history stretching back to 1936, when the Bald Mountain Ski Club installed the first rope tow, followed by the region's first chairlift in 1954. At a summit elevation of 7,064 to 7,100 feet, Terry Peak claims the title of the highest lift-served skiing between the Rocky Mountains and the Alps, delivering roughly 1,100 to 1,164 feet of vertical drop from a base of 5,900 feet, the largest ski area in the heartland. The mountain spans 450 acres, with 29 to 30 trails covering 20 miles served by five lifts, including three high-speed quads, a triple, and a covered magic carpet on the beginner slope. That high elevation lets Terry Peak capture up to three times the snowfall of anywhere else in the region, averaging roughly 100 to 150 inches a year, backed by snowmaking on 60 to 85% of the terrain. Two lodges, Stewart Lodge and Nevada Gulch Lodge, provide space to warm up, eat, and even host weddings and conventions, and Terry Peak even runs its own radio station, KSNO, broadcasting straight from the mountain.
