Set in Emmet County near the charming lakeside town of Harbor Springs, just minutes from Lake Michigan's shoreline, this beloved Boyne Resorts property was known for decades as Boyne Highlands before being rebranded The Highlands at Harbor Springs in December 2021. Its story began in 1955 as the small Harbor Highlands ski area, and after struggling financially, it was purchased by Boyne in the early 1960s along with 2,900 adjoining acres, reopening in 1963 with the world's first three-person triple chairlifts. From a base of 745 to 800 feet to a summit of 1,290 to 1,325 feet, The Highlands delivers a 500 to 552-foot vertical drop, the highest in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, across 300 to 435 acres, the most skiable terrain in the region, with 55 trails and 8 to 11 lifts, including Michigan's only high-speed six-passenger chairlift, installed in 2023. Across the central ridge, intermediate trails like North Challenger and Camelot deliver longer descents with consistent pitch and scenic views of northern Michigan, all served by high-speed quads and triple chairs. North Challenger, the resort's longest run at 1.25 to 1.3 miles, offers a full summit-to-base descent. Advanced skiers head to the North Peak area, added in 1995, for the resort's steepest terrain. Three terrain parks, including the beginner-friendly Funland Park, the medium-featured Challenger Park, and the Burton Riglet Park for young riders, serve freestylers of every level with 15 rails and progressive lines. Two tubing lanes, night skiing, wooded glades, and Nordic and snowshoeing trails round out a truly complete Michigan winter destination.
