Set on Cabin Mountain in Canaan Valley, West Virginia, just a few miles from Davis, Timberline Mountain has been part of the West Virginia ski scene since it opened in January 1987 as Timberline Four Seasons Resort. From a base of 3,268 feet to a summit of 4,268 feet, Timberline offers a full 1,000-foot vertical drop, with 22 trails, including five dedicated glades, across roughly 91 to 100 skiable acres, served by three to four lifts including a high-speed six-pack. That high elevation brings genuinely reliable natural snowfall, averaging around 150 inches in strong seasons, backed by snowmaking on over 90% of the terrain. Every Trail, Every Glade, Every Memory
Timberline's terrain breaks down to roughly a third beginner, a third intermediate, and a third advanced and expert, offering genuinely more challenging skiing than its neighbor Canaan Valley Resort just a couple miles down the road, with steeps, bumps, and glades throughout. The signature run, Salamander, stretches a full two miles, the longest slope in the entire Mid-Atlantic region, with an easy-going pitch that welcomes skiers of nearly every level for a satisfying summit-to-base cruise. Above that, Pearly Glades, Glade Runner, White Lightning, and Thunder Struck deliver real challenge, while Off the Wall and The Drop hold Timberline's most serious expert terrain: steep double blacks that reward strong skiers. In February 2019, financial and infrastructure struggles forced the resort to close, and it filed for bankruptcy that spring. But in November 2019, Indiana-based Perfect North Slopes purchased the property and invested $10 million into two new lifts, upgraded snowmaking, two new terrain parks, and a full lodge remodel, and Timberline reopened for the 2020-21 season stronger than ever. Night skiing on select nights and a warm, welcoming lodge round out a genuine mountain comeback story.
