Rising on the south face of 11,249-foot Mount Hood, about 60 miles east of Portland via the Mount Hood Scenic Byway, Timberline Lodge Ski Area sits below one of the most iconic buildings in American skiing. The lodge itself was constructed between 1936 and 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression, opening on February 4, 1938 as Oregon's first destination ski resort with a portable rope tow, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. The following year brought the Magic Mile chairlift and the Silcox Hut, a stone shelter still standing about a thousand vertical feet above the lodge. From a base of 4,000 feet to a top elevation of 8,540 feet, Timberline delivers 4,540 feet of vertical, the longest in the United States, across 1,430 to 1,685 skiable acres, with 32 to 35 trails served by seven chairlifts, a rope tow, and a magic carpet. But it is Timberline's summer season that makes it truly one of a kind: the Palmer Snowfield, reached by the Magic Mile and Palmer lifts, opens above treeline for wide, groomed, black-diamond skiing at elevations up to 8,540 feet, drawing the U.S. Ski Team for summer training and skiers from around the world chasing turns in July. Terrain parks and a halfpipe spread across the resort keep freestyle riders progressing in every season, and the historic lodge, instantly recognizable to film fans for its exterior appearances in a famous 1980 horror movie, buries its ground floor in snow most winters, with guests entering directly through the second story or a snow tunnel.
