Set on Mount Tecumseh within the planned resort community of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, roughly 130 miles north of Boston along Interstate 93, organized skiing here traces back to the 1930s, when the Civilian Conservation Corps cut the earliest trails on the mountain. In 1966, a group led by Olympic ski racer Tom Corcoran officially opened the modern resort with four new Stadeli double chairlifts and a J-Bar, and the mountain went on to host thirteen World Cup ski racing events, including the World Cup Finals in 1991. From a base to a summit of 4,003 to 4,004 feet, Waterville Valley delivers a 2,020-foot vertical drop across roughly 265 acres, with 52 to 62 trails and five glades served by ten to eleven lifts, including a high-speed six-pack and a high-speed quad. Waterville Valley's terrain breaks down to roughly 15% novice, 59% intermediate, and 26% advanced and expert, making it first and foremost an intermediate's mountain, with over 60% of trails rated blue. Mount Tecumseh itself splits into two distinct zones: the lower main mountain, cut in classic New England fashion with narrow, tree-lined trails and broad boulevards of consistent steepness, and the upper High Country area, home to what may be the widest upper-mountain ski slope anywhere in the East, delivering fantastic views across the valley. The Valley Run Quad serves the mountain's primary beginner terrain with wide, mellow greens, while the Lower Meadows bunny hill gives first-timers their own gentle space near the base. Green Peak, added as an expansion in the mid-2010s, brought 40 acres of green, blue, and single-black terrain on its own 1,000-foot vertical hill, with runs like Governors Run and the short, steep Clean Shaven adding real variety. And of course, there's Bobby's, the run named for the Kennedy family, longtime devotees of this mountain. Four terrain parks, including the notorious Wicked Ditch of the East halfpipe, off-limits to skiers, keep freestyle riders entertained, and 46 miles of Nordic trails extend the winter experience well beyond the lifts.
